For optimal automatic flight monitoring we suggest you register with TripIt.com, this site rocks. You then create an email rule or manually forward your trip itineraries from your travel agent or the airlines to plans@tripit.com and they will create an iCal feed for all your flights. Once you get this setup, you can click on My Profile above and enter the iCal feed URL then we will automatically import your flights from TripIt. Now that's smokin' integration.
We do provide monitoring for more airlines than NorthWest, but we fly them the most. With the acquisition by Delta we are working on getting Delta functionality going since we aren't certain at this point which web site will remain. We do have support for United, American, SouthWest and a few others.
The 30 second elevator pitch - We monitor the flight down in realtime all the way until it lands at it's destination. Not like the airlines that only email you a status 1 hour before scheduled departure. This is useless! As we all know, issues always arise in the last 30 minutes before the flight. If you have connections, we put them on the same screen, there is no need to remember both flight numbers and do multiple flight status searches. One simple bookmark and you always have your flight status at your fingertips. We also correlate FAA Air Traffic Control (ATC) issues for the airports you care about on the day of your flights. Unlike fly.faa.gov that sends you alerts every day that you are registered for an airport. Once your flight has landed at that airport, we don't bother you about what's going on there anymore. We also integrate Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Threat Levels, just in case it ever changes status and there might be backups getting to the airport so they can inspect every vehicle trying to park at the airport. Now the flight notifications, these are so granular its unbelievable. There are no limits to the combinations; my wife only cares if my flight is delay, has taken off or landed; and I cerntainly don't need to know that the plain took off, I'm on it. Other people don't need to know that I've had a gate change, or what my connecting gate information is when I land. but that is super critical for me... You can have your cake and eat it too.
We are currently working on some really cool technology that will find and track your inbound flight so you have a better idea what is really going on. This is currently working for NorthWest flights that aren't departing from a major hub.
